Yandaboo Treaty and Aftermath | The History of Assam

Next to Bhauma-Naraka dynasty, a new powerful dynasty, Barman dynasty by name was established. It came into existence and was established in 4th century by Pushyavarman. After Pushyavarman, there were Samudravarman, Balavarmanand many others to rule over this kingdom. Bhaskarvarman (AD 600-650) was the famous and powerful king who made his friendship with many other emperors including Harsavardhana. His prosperous kingdom covered almost the whole of Northern India. Hiuen Tsang, a Chinese traveller visited his kingdom in AD 7th century.

The history of Assam is the history of a confluence of people from the east, west, south and the north; the confluence of the Austroasiatic, Tibeto-Burman (Sino-Tibetan), Tai and Indo-Aryan cultures.

Yandaboo Treaty and Aftermath

  1. The Treaty of Yandabo was the peace treaty that ended the First Anglo-Burmese War.
  2. The treaty was signed on 24 February 1826, nearly two years after the war formally broke out on 5 March 1824, by General Sir Archibald Campbell.

The Yandaboo Treaty of 1826 had brought Assam under British rule indirectlythrough East India Company causing dissatisfaction to the nobility of the Ahomkingdom. First rebellion against the British Company was broke out under theleadership of Gomdhar Konwar and Dhananjay Borgohain in 1828, but did notsucceed. Gomdhar was imprisoned for 7 years and Dhananjay fled away toNagaland and organised the Hill-tribes to rebel against the British. In the secondattempt, Pioli Phukan and Jiuram were hanged. Haranath, Rupchand, Deoram andBon Singpho were imprisoned in Dacca Jail. Besides many of hill leaders revoltedagainst the alien rulers, but were crushed. Some of them were hanged and somedeported to Andaman.
