Dr. V Mohini Giri, a prominent women’s rights activist, breathed her last recently following a brief illness. At 86, she left behind a legacy of significant contributions to the empowerment of women in India.
Multifaceted Contributions
Apart from her roles in various organizations, Dr. Mohini Giri was also the founder and trustee of Women’s Initiative for Peace in South Asia, trustee of Navdanya, trustee of Justice Sunanda Bhandare Foundation, and trustee of the Foundation for Academic Excellence and Access (FAEA).

Distinguished Roles in Women’s Empowerment
Dr. Giri served as the Chair of the National Commission for Women (NCW) from 1995 to 1998, leaving an indelible mark on the organization’s mission. Additionally, she chaired the Central Social Welfare Board and led the Guild of Service, a New Delhi-based social service organization advocating for women’s and children’s rights in education, employment, and financial security.
Founding the War Widows Association
In 1972, Dr. Giri founded the War Widows Association, addressing the unique vulnerabilities faced by widows and garnering national and international attention to the issue. Her pioneering efforts in this regard have had a lasting impact.
Recognition and Awards
For her tireless work in the field of women’s rights, Dr. Mohini Giri was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 2007, a testament to her dedication and impact.
