The Jharia coalfield is one of the richest coalfields in India, but it is also one of the most challenging. The coalfield is riddled with underground coal fires, which have been burning for centuries. These fires cause subsidence, which can lead to the collapse of buildings and other infrastructure. The fires also pollute the air and water, and pose a serious health risk to the people living in the region.
The Jharia Master Plan has two main objectives:
- To mitigate the impact of underground coal fires and subsidence.
- To improve the quality of life for the people living in the region.
