Sree Narayana Guru (1856-1928)
- Why in News? : Sree Narayana Guru’s 169th birth anniversary was celebrated on 20 August, 2025.
- Introduction : He was a great Indian Saint , philosopher and social reformer who fought against Castebased discrimination in Kerala.
- Born : 20 August, 1856, Chempazhanthy, Kerala.
- Major Contributions and Ideas: Spread the message of ‘One Caste, One Religion, One God’, which focused on social equality and unity. Founded the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam, aimed at uplifting and educating the backward classes, including the Ezhava community. Led the Aruvippuram movement, one of the earliest movements for equal entry into temples.
- Supported the Vaikom Satyagraha (1924-25), an important movement for temple entry in Travancore.
- Established an ashram dedicated to the principle of ‘Om Sahodhyam Sarvatra’ (all human beings are equal in the eyes of God).
