  • Why in news? The Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the great freedom fighter Ram Prasad Bismil on his 128th birth anniversary on 11 June, 2025.
  • Introduction : Ram Prasad Bismil was a great revolutionary and freedom fighter of India. He was one of the founding members of the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA).
  • Early Life : He was born on June 11, 1897, in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. His father was Murlidhar and his mother was Mulmati. From childhood, he was imbued with patriotic sentiments and was influenced by the Arya Samaj.
  • Revolutionary Activities : In 1918, he was involved in the Mainpuri Conspiracy Case. He escaped the police in this case and remained underground for several years. In 1925, he, along with his comrades, Ashfaqulla Khan and Thakur Roshan Singh were involved in Kakori incident The aim was to plunder the British government’s treasury to purchase arms for the HRA.
  • Martyrdom : He was arrested after the Kakori incident and was hanged on 19 December, 1927 in Gorakhpur Jail. Even at the time of his hanging, he shouted slogans of Bharat Mata ki Jai.
  • Literary Contributions : Bismil was also a prolific poet and writer. His famous slogan, “Sarfaroshi ki Tamanna Ab Hamare Dil me Hain” became one of the most inspiring slogans of the Indian independence movement.
