Queen Ahilyabai Holkar (1725-1795)
- Why in discussion? The 300th birth anniversary of Lokmata Ahilyabai Holkar was celebrated in Bhopal by the Ministry of Culture.
- Introduction : Ahilyabai Holkar was a great Maratha queen of the 18th century, who ruled the Indorebased Malwa Kingdom. She was known as an efficient administrator, a just ruler and a patron of art and culture.
- Early Life : She was born on 31 May, 1725 in Chaundi in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. She was married to Khanderao, son of the founder of the Holkar dynasty, Malhar Rao Holkar. After the death of her husband and father-in-law, she took over the reins of the state in 1767 and made Maheshwar as her capital.
- Governance and Achievements : She promoted peace and prosperity during her reign. She listened directly to the public’s concerns and ensured justice. No citizen felt unsafe under her rule. Queen Ahilyabai constructed and renovated numerous temples, ghats, dharamshalas and wells throughout India. These include Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, Jyotirlinga Temple in Somnath and Ghats of Haridwar. She patronized artists, poets and craftsmen. Maheshwar became famous for its excellent handloom industry during her reign.
