  • Why in the News? : Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to India’s brave freedom fighter and Ghadar Party member Kartar Singh Sarabha on his birth anniversary.
  • Introduction : Kartar Singh Sarabha was the youngest and most prominent revolutionary of the Ghadar Party. He is considered as a mentor to Bhagat Singh, who was deeply influenced by his courage and sacrifice.
  • Early life : He was born in Ludhiana district of Punjab on May 24,1896. He went to America for higher education, where he studied at Berkeley University.
  • Revolutionary Activities : Hurt by the racial discrimination faced by Indian immigrants in America, he joined the Ghadar Party. He played a key role in editing the journal Ghadar. During World War I, he returned to India to plan an armed revolution against the British government.
  • Martyrdom : When the revolution plan failed, he was arrested and was tried under section 107 of the Indian Penal Code and hanged on 16 November 1915, at the age of just 19.
