  • Why in news? : A rare stone inscription from the time of Vikramaditya I of the Badami Chalukya dynasty has been discovered in the Madapura Lake in Nyamati taluk of Davangere.
  • Introduction : Vikramaditya I was a prominent ruler of the Chalukya dynasty of Badami. He was the son of Pulakeshin II, during whose reign Vatapi (Badami) was conquered by the Pallavas.
  • Reign and Achievements : He ended the political instability that arose after the death of his father. He defeated the Pallava king Narasimhavarman I and regained control of Badami. He expanded his empire and re-established it as a strong political entity. The Chalukya-Pallava conflict continued during his reign, but he kept the empire safe with his military strength.
  • Art and Literature : Art and architecture also received encouragement during his reign, leading to the continuation of the construction of Chalukya temples.
