Srimanta Shankardev (1449-1568)
- Why in News? : The Assam government on June 12, 2025, presented the Srimanta Sankardev Award to renowned Indian classical dancer and cultural icon Dr. Sonal Mansingh.
- Introduction : Srimanta Sankardev was a 15th-16th century Assamese saint, social reformer, and poet. He is considered the father of Assamese culture and literature. He founded Ekasarana Dharma (neoVaishnavism) in Assam.
- Ekasarana Dharma : It is a monotheistic sect that believes in God Vishnu. Sankardev’s religion focuses on devotion to the deity. Through this religion, Sankardev opposed casteism and rituals and emphasized simple devotion.
- Literary and artistic contributions : He introduced new literary and theatrical genres such as the Bargeet, Ankiya Nat, and Bhaona. His major works include the Kirtan Ghosh and Gunamala. He established Namghars (prayer houses), which became centers of social and cultural activities.
