  • Why in discussion? Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Maharana Pratap on his birth anniversary.
  • About: Maharana Pratap was the 13th Maharana of Mewar. He was known for his bravery, courage, and self-respect. He did not accept subordination of the Mughal empire.
  • Early life : He was born on May 9, 1540, in Kumbhalgarh. His father was Maharana Udai Singh II and his mother was Rani Jayavanta Bai. He was known as Kika in his childhood.
  • Battle of Haldighati : On 18 June,1576, he defeated the commander of the Mughal army, Man Singh, in the battle of Haldighati. Although Maharana Pratap had to retreat in this battle, he never accepted ‘Chetak’ was also injured in this war and sacrificed his life to save his master’s life.
  • Reconquest : After Haldighati, Maharana Pratap continued guerrilla warfare in the Aravalli Hills. Then in 1582, he defeated the Mughals and regained his lost territories.
  • Death: He died on 19 January,1597 in Chavand.
