- Why in the news? : President of India Droupadi Murmu paid floral tributes to former President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed on his 121st birth anniversary at Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 13,2025.
- About : Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was the 5th President of the Republic India. His tenure was from 24 August,1974 to 11 February,1977.
- Political Career : He joined the Congress in 1931 and was active in the independence movement. After independence , he held various ministerial positions in the Assam and Central government. In 1974, he was elected President of India.
- Declaration of Emergency : His most controversial presidential decision was on 25 June,1975 when, on the advice of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, he declared Declaration of Emergency. The decision was taken under Article 352.
- Death and significance : He died while still in office on February 11, 1977. His decision sparked debate about the future role and powers of the President. The 44th Constitutional Amendment was later enacted, which made written advice of the Cabinet mandatory for declaring an emergency.
