  • Why in Discussion? On May 15, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Indian revolutionary Sukhdev Thapar on his 118th birth anniversary.
  • Introduction : Sukhdev Thapar was a companion of Bhagat Singh and Rajguru and a prominent member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA).
  • Early Life : He was born on May 15, 1907, in Ludhiana, Punjab. His father was Ramalal Thapar and his mother was Ralli Devi. In his childhood, Sukhdev witnessed the atrocities of the British government, which fostered a strong sense of patriotism in him.
  • Revolutionary Activities : He was one of the main organizers of the HSRA. In 1928, he, along with Bhagat Singh and Rajguru, planned to avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, whose death was caused by a lathi charge ordered by a British police officer, James A. Scott. As part of this plan, they mistakenly shot another police officer, John P. Sanders.
  • Martyrdom : After the murder of Saunders, Sukhdev was arrested along with his comrades in Lahore Conspiracy Case. He was tried under the IPC. On 23 March, 1931, he was hanged along with Bhagat Singh and Rajguru.
