  • Why in News? : Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s birth anniversary, September 5, is celebrated as Teachers’ Day across India.
  • Introduction : He was a great philosopher, educationist and statesman. He had an M.A. in Philosophy and served as the second President and first Vice President of India.
  • Born : September 5, 1888, Tiruttani, Tamil Nadu.
  • Major Contributions: He believed that the purpose of education was not only intellectual development , but also moral and spiritual development. He emphasized the promotion of human values and culture through education. He also popularized Indian philosophy in the Western world. He also gave modern interpretation of Advaita Vedanta.
  • Political Life : Vice President of India (1952-1962), President of India (1962-1967), Also served in the Soviet Union as the Ambassador of India (19491952).
  • Respect : He was one of the first three people to be awarded India’s highest civilian honour , the Bharat Ratna, in 1954.
