Govind Ballabh Pant (1887-1961)
- Why in News? : On 10th September, 2025, Govind Ballabh Pant’s 138th birth anniversary was celebrated and his statue was unveiled in New Delhi.
- Introduction : A major freedom fighter and Indian politician, he was born on September 10, 1887, Almora, Uttarakhand (then part of British India).
- Main contributions : As a first Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, he abolished Zamindari system in the State. As the Union Home Minister, he played key role in getting recognition for Hindi as the official language of the Union of India. Made significant contributions to the reorganisation of states on linguistic basis.
- Other Facts: Active participation in Non-Cooperation Movement, Salt Satyagraha and Quit India Movement. In 1957 he was awarded India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.
